There are definitely clear cut similarities between different world super powers throughout history. they usually start out small and as their kingdoms/country's grow so does their power. but there is always a climax, and a downfall. take the Roman empire for example. It was massive, and definitely THE super power of its time. Rome was the lap of luxury for an extremely long period. But the power of Rome dropped substantially, until the bitter end when it was sacked in 410 by the Visigoths. by looking at the model of Rome we can compare almost any great nation. The Greeks, The Aztecs, The British empire (tho they didn't fall as hard). Theres always a beginning, and theres always an end.

Are there any instances when a country has been a super power, crumbled, and then became a super power again?

the closest instence i can think of is Great britian. there not The super power now but they are pretty close. Rome would also be debateible because of the Holy roman empire. But personally i think its a completly diferent society therefor, Different Power.

Pat I also think world power can be compared almost to a persopn. they learn as they go. They make their own set of mistakes and hopefully learn from them. In the case of America there've been things like Vietnam (and George Bush, just kidding)and slavery, not to mention the civil war. The french made the same mistake with vietnam in the early twentieth century; they stayed there for eight years until they left (hmmm that'ds how long we've been in Iraq) they learned you just can't kill everyone in the jungle and you can't force them to act the way you want to if all you have is a standing army. I'm not so sure that Great Britain is almost a super power today but I do believe that America is on the brink of losing it's superpower status (due to internal and external problems) and that China is on it's way to king status. Yay now we get to wait and watch China make all the mistakes a new superpower makes. Just as the rerst of the world got to sit and watch MTV and cry. But I guess that's how kids (or thousands of years old countries reborn) are.

Yea, Great Britain is a good example of a once crushed super power rising again. But I don't think that it can be given the actual name "super power" because if you look at Rome, it controlled and somewhat dominated the world in its prime like an universal monarchy. Great Britain never got the chance to return as an universal monarchy. Like Pat said, it was a Different Power.
